Papers, c. 1843-c. 1944.

This collection, gathered by Charles Knowles Bolton includes his own papers as well as papers of his mother, Sarah Knowles Bolton, his father-in-law, Edward Stanwood, and his wife, Ethel Stanwood Bolton. The manuscript box contains a scrapbook of Shirley memorabilia, mostly from the period of Bolton's participation in Shirley school and political activities, and includes programs of high school graduations, proms, local elections, etc. The box also contains three volumes of notes by Ethel Stanwood Bolton (1873-1954) probably gathered in preparation for her book Shirley Uplands and Intervales (1914). There is also a record book of Shirley School District #2, 1843-1869, and a record book of the lyceum, The Shirley Institute, 1861-1871. The first 18 octavo volumes were kept by Charles Knowles Bolton and include an index to family letters, 1934; an essay "Timothy Bolton of Shirley," 1944; an essay "Gilbert Stuart and the Newtons," 1942; verses; reminiscences; lists of books, poems, and writings by Bolton; and an essay "The Adams Family of Lunenburg and Shirley, Mass.," 1942. There are three volumes of selections (compiled by Charles Knowles Bolton) from the journal of Sarah Knowles Bolton (1841-1916), poet and biographer. The entries date from 1894-1915 and are concerned primarily with the people she met and corresponded with, her literary and temperance interests, and her great concern with animals. The rest of the collection is correspondence of Sarah Knowles Bolton, Ethel Stanwood Bolton, Edward Stanwood, and Charles Knowles Bolton, Sarah's correspondence reflects, as do the diary selections, her many literary and humanitarian interests. One volume contains correspondence and notes pertaining to Ethel Stanwood Bolton's pamphlet "Wax Portraits and Silhouettes" (1941). Edward Stanwood (1841-1923) was the editor of Youth's Companion and much of his correspondence concerns his work and political interests. The correspondence of Charles Knowles Bolton reflects his work at the Boston Athenaeum and retirement interests. There are a few personal family letters. Principal correspondents for the collection include Charles Francis Adams (1835-1915), James Gillespie Blaine, Gamaliel Bradford, Mary Abigail Dodge, Jean Dummer, Worthington Chauncey Ford, William Lawrence, Henry Cabot Lodge, Robert Lincoln O'Brien, James Ford Rhodes, Edmund Clarence Stedman, Francis Amasa Walker, Barrett Wendell, Frances Elizabeth Caroline Willard.
